How The Newly Promoted Assignment Editor - 940 Words

To the newly promoted assignment editor: I would first like to congratulate you on your promotion. Our newsroom strives to create a positive relationship between reporters and editors. I wanted to take the time and write about your new role in helping improve the quality of journalism. Reporters need editors, and a good relationship between the two will help set up an opportunity for a successful story. John Green, an American author, said, â€Å"In the end, what makes a book valuable is not the paper it’s printed on, but the thousands of hours of work by dozens of people who are dedicated to creating the best possible reading experience for you.† It can be easily seen that the difference between a fascinating news story and a so-so one is†¦show more content†¦It is important to dig into who the audience will be and who you will be the interview sources. Ask questions such as: Why is this a story? Where is this story taking place? Does the story have a good concept? After the reporter has gone out to collect all the information, it is important to have a second discussion. All the information gathered should be laid out and a lead should be developed. It is also necessary to create a plan for the actual story. A third discussion will come later to talk about any additional information that was left out of the story that should be incorporated. Finally, a conversation should be held to talk about lessons learned from this story so problems may not arise in the future. As an assignment editor, it is important to always be honest. Let the reporter know about any changes made so there are no surprises. Always ask questions, be specific and avoid assumptions. Relationships between you and a reporter may become antagonistic at times. Never give a wrong due date for an assignment in hopes of having more time to edit. Reporters will find out and controversy may start to form. Reporters may also have an opposing opinion on something you see needs changed. Communicate in person, face-to-f ace, so no confusion or misinterpretation is created. Always keep in mind that no two reporters are alike. Treat each reporter as his or her own individual or problems may arise in the newsroom.
