The Death Of A Black Slave Clearing A Table - 1260 Words

â€Å"Watch yourself,† the bartender mutters at a black slave clearing a table at the local tavern. â€Å"Damn niggers can’t even walk in a straight line nowadays.† Kevin, sitting at the bar, stares down, unsure of what to think. He looks around and notices another white man at the bar, nodding in agreement. â€Å"They’re not even worth the trouble of feeding and clothing them,† the patron responds, causing the bartender to chuckle. The bartender casually lights a hand rolled cigar. The aroma of smoke fills Kevin s nostrils, causing him to suppress a cough. Blowing smoke, the bartender asks Kevin, â€Å"What’s your story? How The Newly Promoted Assignment Editor - 940 Words

To the newly promoted assignment editor: I would first like to congratulate you on your promotion. Our newsroom strives to create a positive relationship between reporters and editors. Ask questions such as: Why is this a story? Where is this story taking place? Does the story have a good concept? After the reporter has gone out to collect all the information, it is important to have a second discussion. All the information gathered should be laid out and a lead should be developed. It is also necessary to create a plan for the actual story. A third discussion will come later to talk about any additional information that was left out of the story that should be incorporated. Finally, a conversation should be held to talk about lessons learned from this story so problems may not arise in the future. As an assignment editor, it is important to always be honest. Let the reporter know about any changes made so there are no surprises. Always ask questions, be specific and avoid assumptions. Relationships between you and a reporter may become antagonistic at times. Never give a wrong due date for an assignment in hopes of having more time to edit. Reporters will find out and controversy may start to form. Reporters may also have an opposing opinion on something you see needs changed. Communicate in person, face-to-f ace, so no confusion or misinterpretation is created. Always keep in mind that no two reporters are alike. After much communication, the members now have a common set of expectations of acceptable member behavior. In the fourth stage the structure of the group is accepted by group members and is fully functional. This is the performing stage. The group is now performing the task at hand. This is also the last stage for permanent work groups. Groups that are temporary move on to the final stage of adjourning. In this stage, the group wraps things up and look back on what was accomplished. Even though there are five stages in a group development, the group doesn’t have to be in one at a time. The different stages aren’t always black and white. Some stages can be performed simultaneously. On occasion, the group will regress to previous stages. But for the most part, the group progresses to completing the common initial goal / task. The group members don’t just accomplish the task; they also form wonderful friendships among themselves. Without a great deal of communication with each member, the group will never get to the next stage and getting the task done as a group will seem impossible.
